In 2013, I began teaching a program that combined photography, creative writing, and hands-on creative projects for a small group of homeschool students in the Greater DC Metro area. The goal was never to teach students how to become photographers. Instead, photography and creative writing served as tools for observation, critical thinking, reflection, communication, and self-discovery. The program was designed to complement traditional education by helping students develop essential life skills alongside academic growth. I called the program Learning Through A Lens.
Coming Soon: Free Downloadable Curriculum
After nearly a decade of teaching, testing, and refinement, the complete Learning Through A Lens curriculum will soon be available as a free download. Created for parents, educators, homeschool families, youth organizations, and community programs, the curriculum uses photography, creative writing, and project-based learning to help students explore ideas, ask questions, and better understand themselves and the world around them.
Through a series of visual and written projects, students engage with themes such as communication, relationships, emotional awareness, identity, and personal growth. Along the way, they strengthen important academic and life skills, including writing, observation, analysis, critical thinking, and thoughtful communication.
Why Learning Through A Lens Is Different
Learning Through A Lens is not an art program focused on technical mastery. It is a framework for learning through creativity. By creating, observing, writing, and reflecting, students develop confidence, curiosity, empathy, and a deeper understanding of their own experiences. The curriculum is flexible and can be adapted for classrooms, homeschool environments, youth groups, community centers, and independent learning.
